The STOP sign is the only octagonal (eight-sided) road sign. This special shape means you can recognise it even if snow, mud or dirt covers the word 'STOP'. Rule 171 of The Highway Code says you must stop behind the line at a STOP sign and wait until it is safe before entering the junction.
