Road and traffic signs
You see this sign showing '10%'. What should you be ready to do?
- Speed up to keep your momentum
- Select a lower gear to help control your speedCorrect
- Coast in neutral to save fuel
- Keep your foot on the brake the whole way
Why?
This triangular sign warns of a steep hill downwards, with the gradient shown as a percentage. Rule 160 of The Highway Code advises selecting a lower gear before a steep descent so engine braking helps hold your speed, keeping the footbrake in reserve so it does not overheat.
