Vulnerable road users

You are turning into a side road. A cyclist is riding straight ahead on your left. What should you do?

  • Turn quickly across in front of the cyclist
  • Expect the cyclist to stop and let you turn
  • Give way and do not cut across the cyclist going ahead
    Correct
  • Sound your horn and complete your turn

Why?

Rule H3 of The Highway Code says you should not cut across cyclists going ahead when you turn into or out of a junction. Give way to them, even where they are in a cycle lane.
