Alertness

Why should you look well ahead and not just at the vehicle directly in front of you?

  • So you can drive closer to the car in front
  • So you can anticipate hazards early and be ready to react
    Correct
  • So you can keep a higher constant speed
  • So you do not need to check your mirrors

Why?

Watching far ahead lets you spot problems like braking traffic or a closing junction before they become emergencies. Rule 146 of The Highway Code says you should drive defensively, anticipating what might happen and being prepared to react.
