Alertness

How should you normally hold the steering wheel while driving along?

  • With one hand, keeping the other free
  • With both hands where possible, to stay in full control
    Correct
  • With your fingertips so you can turn quickly
  • Loosely, so the wheel can self-centre

Why?

Both hands on the wheel give you the control and quick response you need if a hazard appears suddenly. Rule 160 of The Highway Code says that once moving you should drive with both hands on the wheel where possible, to help you remain in full control at all times.
