Alertness

You are following a cyclist and intend to turn left just ahead. What should you NOT do?

  • Overtake the cyclist just before you turn left
    Correct
  • Hold back and let the cyclist clear the junction first
  • Check your left mirror before turning
  • Give the cyclist plenty of room

Why?

Overtaking then turning across a cyclist can trap them against the kerb as you cut in. Rule 182 of The Highway Code says you should not overtake just before you turn left, and should watch out for cyclists coming up on your left.
