Alertness
You are driving on a long, straight and monotonous motorway and start to feel drowsy. What is the best action?
- Turn the heater up to stay comfortable
- Speed up so the journey ends sooner
- Leave at the next services or exit and restCorrect
- Open the window and keep driving to your destination
Why?
A dull, unchanging road makes tiredness creep up, and fresh air or the radio will not keep a sleepy driver safe. Rule 91 of The Highway Code says that if you feel sleepy you should stop in a safe place to rest — on a motorway that means the next services or exit.
