Alertness

Before you slow down or stop suddenly, what should you do first?

  • Check your mirror to see how close the traffic behind is
    Correct
  • Sound your horn to warn the driver behind
  • Switch on your hazard lights
  • Brake as hard as you can straight away

Why?

A vehicle following too closely could run into you if you brake without warning. Rule 161 of The Highway Code says you should use your mirrors in good time before changing speed, so you know what is behind you before you slow down.
