Alertness
You are on a road with a 60 mph limit but there is thick fog. How should the conditions affect your speed?
- Keep to 60 mph, as that is the legal limit
- Reduce your speed so you can stop within the distance you can see to be clearCorrect
- Drive at 60 mph but put your hazard lights on
- Speed up to get out of the fog sooner
Why?
A speed limit is a maximum, not a target, and fog cuts how far ahead you can see and react. Rule 146 of The Highway Code says you should not treat the speed limit as a target and should take the road and traffic conditions into account.
