Alertness

You are changing direction and there is a cyclist filtering past on your side. What should you do?

  • Cut across in front of the cyclist
  • Give way to the cyclist and do not cut across them
    Correct
  • Expect the cyclist to stop for you
  • Speed up so you clear the cyclist

Why?

Cyclists are vulnerable and can be badly hurt if you turn across their path. Rule 160 of The Highway Code says you should give way to cyclists when changing direction or lane, and not cut across them.
