It is autumn and the road ahead is covered in wet leaves. Why should you slow down?
- The leaves may hide potholes in the road
- Wet leaves make your headlights less effective
- Your tyres have less grip, so stopping takes longerCorrect
- The leaves could block your view of the road markings
Why?
Rule 227 of The Highway Code explains that in wet conditions your tyres have less grip on the road, so stopping distances increase. A slippery surface such as wet leaves or spilt diesel reduces grip even further, so slow down and leave extra room.
