Other types of vehicle

You're driving in a town where trams operate. What should you remember about trams?

  • Trams can steer around you if you block their path
  • Trams cannot steer to avoid you, so never park or drive on the rails
    Correct
  • Trams always give way to cars at junctions
  • Trams are not allowed to share the road with other traffic

Why?

Trams run on fixed rails and cannot steer to avoid other traffic. Rules in The Highway Code's guidance on trams warn that you must not drive or park on tram lines, and that the rails can be slippery for cyclists and motorcyclists, so extra care is needed crossing them.
