Road and traffic signs

No stopping (clearway)

What does this sign mean?

  • No parking, but you may stop to load
  • No entry for vehicles
  • Bus stop for buses only
  • You must not stop at all, even briefly
    Correct

Why?

This blue circle with a red ring and red cross is the 'no stopping' (clearway) sign. It means you must not stop, even for a moment, so the road stays clear and traffic keeps flowing. Rule 109 of The Highway Code says you must obey signs giving orders.
