Safety and your vehicle

You have just changed a wheel at the roadside. What sensible check should you make soon afterwards?

  • That the spare tyre is a different colour
  • That the wheel nuts are still tight after a short distance
    Correct
  • That the car radio still works
  • That the boot has been left empty

Why?

Wheel nuts can settle and work loose in the first few miles after a wheel is changed. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says your vehicle must be kept roadworthy, so re-check that the nuts are properly tight, using the correct tool, after driving a short distance.
