Safety and your vehicle

Before towing a trailer, what should you check about its lights?

  • Nothing, as a trailer does not need any lights
  • Only that the trailer has a number plate fitted
  • That its lights and indicators work through the car's electrics
    Correct
  • That the trailer lights are a different colour from the car's

Why?

A trailer's rear lights, brake lights and indicators connect to the car through the towbar electrics, and other drivers rely on them to read your signals. Annex 6 of The Highway Code says lights and indicators must work, so plug in and test them before you set off.
