Safety margins

On a dry road, how can you check you are keeping a safe distance from the car in front?

  • Stay one car length behind for every 10 mph
  • Leave at least a two-second time gap
    Correct
  • Keep about half a second behind
  • Stay close enough to read its number plate

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code recommends the two-second rule in good conditions: leave at least a two-second time gap between you and the vehicle in front. In wet weather this gap should be at least doubled to four seconds.
