Safety margins

You are driving through a contraflow system on a motorway. What should you do?

  • Keep to the speed limit and a safe distance from the car in front
    Correct
  • Move into the fastest lane to clear the area quickly
  • Switch on your hazard warning lights and slow to a stop
  • Overtake slower vehicles on the right only

Why?

Rule 290 of The Highway Code says that in a contraflow system you should reduce speed in good time, obey the temporary speed limit and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Lanes are often narrower and traffic flows in both directions close together.
