Safety margins
At 70 mph, how does your braking distance compare with your thinking distance?
- The braking distance is much greaterCorrect
- They are about equal
- The thinking distance is much greater
- There is no braking distance at high speed
Why?
In the Typical Stopping Distances chart with rule 126, at 70 mph the thinking distance is about 21 metres but the braking distance is about 75 metres. Braking distance grows fastest as speed rises, which is why extra speed is so dangerous.
