Safety margins

Why do large vehicles need a greater distance to stop than a car?

  • Their brakes are much weaker
  • Their much greater weight takes longer to stop
    Correct
  • Their drivers react more slowly
  • They always travel faster than cars

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code notes that large vehicles and motorcycles need a greater distance to stop. A lorry's much greater weight means it takes longer to slow down, so never pull in too close in front of one.
