Safety margins

You are about to drive through a road tunnel. What should you do?

  • Use full-beam headlights and speed up
  • Switch on dipped headlights and keep a safe distance
    Correct
  • Turn off all your lights to avoid dazzle
  • Put on your hazard warning lights

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code advises using dipped headlights in a tunnel and keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, as visibility can be reduced. Follow any signs and, in a queue, leave room to pull up safely.
