Safety margins
You are on a motorway and the road becomes wet. What should you do with your following distance?
- Keep the same two-second gap
- Reduce the gap to see better
- Move as close as possible to the vehicle ahead
- Increase it to at least four secondsCorrect
Why?
Rule 126 says to keep a two-second gap in the dry, and rule 227 warns that wet stopping distances are at least doubled. So on a wet motorway you should at least double the gap to four seconds or more.
