Safety margins
A vehicle behind is following you too closely (tailgating). What is the safest response?
- Brake sharply to warn the driver
- Ease off gently to leave a bigger gap in front of youCorrect
- Speed up to get away from them
- Move onto the hard shoulder to let them pass
Why?
Rule 126 of The Highway Code warns that tailgating is dangerous. If you are being tailgated, ease off the accelerator gradually to open up a larger gap in front, so you can brake gently and avoid a sudden stop.
