Safety margins

In fog, another driver is following very close behind you. What should you not do?

  • Accelerate to get away from them
    Correct
  • Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front
  • Use your brakes gently and in good time
  • Slow down smoothly if you need to

Why?

Rule 235 of The Highway Code says in fog you should not accelerate to get away from a vehicle that is too close behind. Keep your own safe distance in front and brake gently and early so your brake lights warn the driver behind.
