Safety margins
You are driving fast on a wet motorway. What happens to your braking distance?
- It is much longer than on a dry roadCorrect
- It becomes shorter because of the water
- It stays the same as in the dry
- It only changes if you brake hard
Why?
Rule 227 of The Highway Code warns that in the wet stopping distances are at least doubled because tyres have less grip. At high motorway speeds the braking part is already long, so wet roads make it much longer still.
