Safety margins

You are towing a caravan and it begins to snake (swing from side to side). What should you do?

  • Brake hard at once to stop the swinging
  • Ease off the accelerator and slow down gently
    Correct
  • Steer sharply against the swing
  • Speed up to pull the caravan straight

Why?

Rule 250 of The Highway Code says if a trailer or caravan starts to snake, ease off the accelerator and reduce speed gently. Do not brake harshly or steer sharply, as that can make the swinging worse.
