Safety margins

You are suddenly dazzled by bright, low sunlight ahead. What should you do?

  • Slow down, and stop if you cannot see
    Correct
  • Speed up to get out of the glare
  • Close your eyes for a moment
  • Switch on your full-beam headlights

Why?

Rule 237 of The Highway Code says if you are dazzled by bright sunlight you should slow down and, if necessary, stop. You cannot keep a safe margin from hazards you cannot see, so reduce speed until your view clears.
