Safety margins

Heavy spray from vehicles on a wet motorway is cutting your visibility. What should you do?

  • Keep well back and use dipped headlights
    Correct
  • Move as close as you can to see better
  • Switch to full-beam headlights
  • Stop in the running lane until it clears

Why?

Rule 226 of The Highway Code says you must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, and rule 227 says keep well back in the wet. Dropping back out of the spray also improves how far you can see and plan.

Highway Code rules 226, 227
