Safety margins
You are following a cyclist on a narrow road. How much room should you allow behind them?
- Less than for a car, as they are slower
- No gap is needed for a cyclist
- Enough room, as they may wobble or swerve to avoid a potholeCorrect
- Close enough to pass the moment the road widens
Why?
Rule 213 of The Highway Code says cyclists may need to swerve suddenly around drains, potholes or in gusty winds. Stay well back and do not follow too closely, so you have room to react if they move out.
