Safety margins

What is the main benefit of leaving a larger gap to the vehicle in front?

  • It gives you more time to see and react to hazards ahead
    Correct
  • It lets you drive faster safely
  • It saves wear on your tyres
  • It means you never need to check mirrors

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code says leaving a safe gap, and never getting closer than your stopping distance, gives you time and space to react. A bigger gap widens your view and lets you plan for hazards further ahead.
