What is the main benefit of leaving a larger gap to the vehicle in front?

It gives you more time to see and react to hazards ahead
Correct
It lets you drive faster safely
It saves wear on your tyres
It means you never need to check mirrors

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code says leaving a safe gap, and never getting closer than your stopping distance, gives you time and space to react. A bigger gap widens your view and lets you plan for hazards further ahead.
