Safety margins
You are waiting at a side road to join a busy main road. When is it safe to pull out?
- As soon as any gap appears, however small
- When the car nearest to you flashes its lights
- Whenever you have waited long enough
- Only when there is a gap big enough to join without making others slow downCorrect
Why?
Rule 170 of The Highway Code says you must not emerge until there is a gap large enough for you to join safely. A safe margin means other drivers should not have to brake or swerve because you pulled out.
