Safety margins

You are in slow-moving, queuing traffic. Why should you still leave some space in front of you?

  • To let other drivers cut in ahead of you
  • So you can move out if the vehicle ahead breaks down
    Correct
  • To save fuel by rolling forward
  • So you do not have to use your mirrors

Why?

Rule 151 of The Highway Code says that in queuing traffic you should leave enough space to be able to manoeuvre if the vehicle in front breaks down, or to let an emergency vehicle get past.
