Safety margins

You are following a motorcyclist on a fast road. What gap should you leave?

  • Less than for a car, as bikes are small
  • No gap is needed behind a motorcycle
  • You can drive close as they stop instantly
  • A greater distance, as they need room to stop
    Correct

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code states that large vehicles and motorcycles need a greater distance to stop. Leave plenty of room behind a motorcyclist so you are not left with too little space if they slow or stop suddenly.
