Safety margins

You are driving on an icy road. How should you use the brakes and gears?

  • Brake hard and change down quickly
  • Keep the clutch down the whole time
  • Drive slowly, in a high gear, and brake very gently
    Correct
  • Use the handbrake to slow down

Why?

Rule 231 of The Highway Code says to drive extremely carefully on ice: use a slow speed, keep to as high a gear as possible, and accelerate and brake very gently to avoid sudden actions that could cause a skid.
