Safety margins
How can you judge a two-second gap to the vehicle in front?
- Pick a fixed point and count two seconds as it passesCorrect
- Guess two car lengths at any speed
- Count to two after you brake
- Watch until its brake lights come on
Why?
Rule 126 of The Highway Code suggests choosing a fixed point, such as a road sign or bridge, and checking that at least two seconds pass between the vehicle in front reaching it and you reaching it. Double this gap in the wet.
