Safety margins

You are following a large lorry. Why should you keep well back from it?

  • So you can see further past it and plan ahead
    Correct
  • So the driver can see your headlights
  • So you can overtake without signalling
  • So you use less fuel

Why?

Rule 222 of The Highway Code says large vehicles can block your view, so pulling back to increase your separation lets you see and plan further ahead. It also keeps you out of the lorry's large blind spots.
