Safety margins

It is raining heavily. What should you do about the gap to the car in front?

  • Keep the same gap as on a dry road
  • Move closer so you don't lose sight of it
  • Keep well back to allow for the longer stopping distance
    Correct
  • Switch on hazard lights and stop

Why?

Rule 227 of The Highway Code says that in wet weather you should keep well back from the vehicle in front. This gives you room for the longer stopping distance and improves how far you can see and plan ahead.
