Safety margins
What does 'thinking distance' mean?
- The distance your car travels after the brakes are applied
- The distance your car travels while you react, before you brakeCorrect
- The safe gap you leave in wet weather
- The distance you can see clearly ahead
Why?
Rule 126 of The Highway Code splits overall stopping distance into thinking distance and braking distance. Thinking distance is how far the car travels while you notice a hazard and react, before the brakes start to slow you down.
