What does 'braking distance' mean?

  • The distance travelled while you decide to brake
  • The total of thinking and braking together
  • The distance your car travels after the brakes are applied until it stops
    Correct
  • The gap you keep behind a large vehicle

Why?

Rule 126 of The Highway Code describes braking distance as the distance the car travels once the brakes are applied until it comes to a complete stop. Added to your thinking distance, it makes up the overall stopping distance.
