Hazard awareness

You switched on your rear fog lights in thick fog. The fog has now cleared. What must you do?

  • Leave them on for the rest of the journey
  • Use them only on the motorway
  • Switch them off, as they can dazzle drivers behind
    Correct
  • Switch to full beam instead

Why?

Rule 236 of The Highway Code says you must switch off fog lights when visibility improves, because bright rear fog lights can dazzle following drivers and be mistaken for brake lights.
