Hazard awareness

You see children on the pavement looking away from you towards a friend across the road. Why is this a hazard?

  • They may step into the road without seeing you
    Correct
  • They will always cross at a crossing
  • They can only cross when the road is clear
  • They are not your concern once on the pavement

Why?

Rule 146 of The Highway Code says try to anticipate what pedestrians might do. If children are looking the other way, they may step into the road without seeing you, so slow down and be prepared to stop.
