Why is the recovery position used for an unconscious casualty who is breathing?

Why?
Annex 7 of The Highway Code recommends the recovery position for an unconscious casualty who is breathing. Lying on their side keeps the airway open and allows blood or vomit to drain out of the mouth, which lowers the risk of choking before help arrives.
