Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You are driving and your car hits another vehicle. What is the very first thing the law requires you to do?

  • Stop
    Correct
  • Phone your family
  • Drive to the nearest police station
  • Take a photo before doing anything else

Why?

Rule 286 of The Highway Code says that if you are involved in a collision which causes damage or injury to another person, vehicle, animal or property, you must stop. Only after stopping can you exchange details or, if needed, report the collision to the police.
