Incidents, accidents and emergencies
A front tyre suddenly bursts while you are driving at speed. What should you do?
- Hold the wheel firmly, ease off the accelerator and let the car slow graduallyCorrect
- Brake as hard as you can straight away
- Steer sharply onto the verge at once
- Speed up to keep the car balanced
Why?
Driving – the essential skills says that if a tyre bursts you should grip the steering wheel firmly to keep control, take your foot off the accelerator and let the vehicle slow down gradually. Braking hard could make you skid or lose control, so only pull over gently once the car has slowed.
