Incidents, accidents and emergencies
The back of your car starts to slide to the right on a wet bend. How should you try to correct this skid?
- Brake hard and hold the wheel still
- Accelerate firmly to pull out of it
- Steer to the left, away from the slide
- Ease off the pedals and steer to the right, into the skidCorrect
Why?
Rule 119 of The Highway Code says that if skidding occurs you should remove the cause by releasing the brake or easing off the accelerator, then steer in the direction of the skid. If the rear slides right, steer right to bring the car back into line. Harsh braking makes the skid worse.
