Incidents, accidents and emergencies
Your car develops a fault on a motorway that has no hard shoulder. Where should you try to stop?
- In an emergency area, if you can reach one safelyCorrect
- In the middle lane with your hazard lights on
- Anywhere, as long as you switch the engine off
- On a slip road facing the oncoming traffic
Why?
Rules 270 and 277 of The Highway Code deal with problems on motorways without a hard shoulder. If your vehicle develops a fault, move to the left and use an emergency area or the next exit if you can reach one safely. Emergency areas are marked with orange surfacing and blue signs.
