Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You have stopped on the hard shoulder of a motorway after breaking down. How should you leave the car?

  • Get out by the left-hand door and wait behind the safety barrier
    Correct
  • Get out by the right-hand door, nearest the traffic
  • Stay in the car in the driver's seat with the doors locked
  • Stand in front of the car to wave down help

Why?

Rule 277 of The Highway Code says to leave your vehicle by the door furthest from the traffic — the left-hand side — and to wait behind a safety barrier if there is one. Standing between the car and passing traffic, or staying inside on the hard shoulder, is very dangerous.
