Incidents, accidents and emergencies
You have to drive through a stretch of shallow floodwater on the road. How should you do it?
- Drive slowly in a low gear, then test your brakes afterwardsCorrect
- Drive through as fast as you can to avoid stalling
- Follow closely behind the car in front to save time
- Coast through with the clutch held down the whole way
Why?
Driving – the essential skills says to drive through floodwater slowly in a low gear, keeping the engine speed up so water does not enter the exhaust. Wet brakes are less effective, so test them gently once you are clear of the water and dry them by braking lightly.
