Incidents, accidents and emergencies

You reverse into a parked car and damage it, but the owner is nowhere to be found. What must you do?

  • Drive away, because no one saw what happened
  • Report the accident to the police within 24 hours
    Correct
  • Wait five minutes, then leave if no one comes
  • Leave a note only if the damage looks serious

Why?

After any accident that causes injury or damage you must stop and give your name, address and vehicle details to anyone with a good reason to have them. If you cannot do this because the owner is not there, Rule 286 of The Highway Code says you must report it to the police as soon as you can, and in any case within 24 hours.
