Incidents, accidents and emergencies

Smoke starts coming from under the bonnet of your car. What should you do first?

  • Open the bonnet fully straight away to see the problem
  • Get everyone out of the vehicle and well away from it
    Correct
  • Pour water over the bonnet to cool the engine
  • Keep driving until you reach a service station

Why?

Fire spreads quickly, so your priority is to get everyone out of the vehicle and well away from it before doing anything else. Opening the bonnet fully feeds the fire more oxygen and can make it flare up. Warn other traffic if you can, then call the fire service.
