Incidents, accidents and emergencies
You have opened an unconscious casualty's airway. How long should you check to see if they are breathing normally?
- For about one full minute
- For up to 30 seconds
- You don't need to check breathing at all
- For up to 10 secondsCorrect
Why?
The 'B' in DR ABC stands for Breathing. Annex 7 of The Highway Code says that once the airway is open you should check for normal breathing for up to 10 seconds by looking, listening and feeling. If they are not breathing, you begin chest compressions.
